Habermas and the Unfinished Project of Modernity: Critical Essays on the Philosophical Discourse of Modernity by Maurizio P. D'Entreves,
This collection of ten essays offers the first systematic assessment of Jurgen Habermas's "Philosophical Discourse of Modernity," a book that defended the rational potential of the modern age against the depiction of modernity as a spent epoch. The essays (of which four are newly commissioned, five were published in the journal "Praxis International," an essay on criticism and one -- by Habermas -- first appeared in translation in "New Critique") are divided into two sections: "Critical Rejoinders" an essay on criticism and "Thematic Reformulations."An opening essay by d'Entreves sets out the main issues an essay on criticism and orients the debate between Habermas an essay on criticism and the postmodernists by identifying two different senses of responsibility: a responsibility to act versus a responsibility to otherness (an openness to difference, dissonance, an essay on criticism and ambiguity). These are linked with two alternative understandings of the primary function of language: action-orienting versus world-disclosing. This is a fruitful way of looking at the issues that Habermas has raised in his attempt to resurrect an essay on criticism and complete the project of Enlightenment.Habermas's essay discusses the main themes of his book in the context of a critical engagement with neoconservative cultural an essay on criticism and political trends. The main body of essays offer an interesting collection of points of view, for an essay on criticism and against Habermas's position by philosophers, social scientists, intellectual historians, an essay on criticism and literary critics.SECTIONS & CONTRIBUTORS: "Introduction," Maurizio Passerin d'Entreves. Anatomy of Criticism: Four Essays by Northrop Frye,

Anatomy of Criticism: Four Essays by Northrop Frye,
Striking out at the conception of criticism as restricted to mere opinion or ritual gesture, Northrop Frye wrote this magisterial work proceeding on the assumption that criticism is a structure of thought an essay on criticism and knowledge in its own right. In four brilliant essays on historical, ethical, archetypical, an essay on criticism and rhetorical criticism, employing examples of world literature from ancient times to the present, Frye reconceived literary criticism as a total history rather than a linear progression through time. Literature, Frye wrote, is "the place where our imaginations find the ideal that they try to pass on to belief an essay on criticism and action, where they find the vision which is the source of both the dignity an essay on criticism and the joy of life". And the critical study of literature provides a basic way "to produce, out of the society we have to live in, a vision of the society we want to live in". Harold Bloom contributes a fascinating an essay on criticism and highly personal foreword that examines Frye's mode of criticism an essay on criticism and thought (as opposed to Frye's criticism itself) as being indispensable in the modern literary world.
